Cannabis Travel Guide 2026–2027: 420-Friendly Destinations and What to Pack

March 03, 2024 7 min read

Updated October 2026

Short answer: in the US, 24 states plus DC allow adult-use cannabis, so you can buy at a licensed dispensary with a valid 21+ ID and consume on private property or in a licensed lounge. Never fly with it or carry it across state lines or borders. Abroad, Canada is the simplest legal trip. Germany, the Netherlands, Uruguay and Thailand all come with big asterisks for tourists.

Cannabis travel used to mean a pilgrimage to Amsterdam and a lot of nervous glancing over your shoulder. Now half the country has legal dispensaries, and "420-friendly" shows up on rental listings next to "pet-friendly." Progress.

But the rules didn't get simpler. They got more local. This guide covers where it's actually legal for visitors in 2026 and 2027, where you can light up once you buy, how to shop a dispensary like a local, and what goes in your bag (and what never does). We're a grinder company, so the packing section has opinions.

Rule zero: it doesn't travel with you

Before the fun part, the part that keeps you out of trouble:

The move every experienced cannabis traveler makes: buy it there, enjoy it there, leave it there.

Legal US destinations

According to the Marijuana Policy Project, 24 states have legalized cannabis for adults 21 and over, plus Washington, DC. In practice that includes the whole West Coast (California, Oregon, Washington), the Mountain West and Southwest (Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, Alaska), a big Midwest bloc (Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio) and most of the Northeast (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Delaware). Virginia legalized adult possession and home grow back in 2021, but licensed retail sales aren't scheduled to start until July 1, 2027, so don't plan a dispensary trip around it yet.

Every state sets its own purchase limits, taxes and consumption rules, and cities can opt out of retail entirely. Look up the state cannabis agency before you go.

International destinations: what's real for tourists

Country Can tourists buy legally? What to know
Canada Yes, at authorized retailers Legal age is 19 in most provinces, 18 in Alberta and 21 in Quebec, with a 30 gram public possession limit (Health Canada). Provinces set their own rules on where you can consume.
Germany No retail shops Adults can possess up to 25 grams in public and grow 3 plants at home, but there are no stores, and cannabis clubs require members to have lived in Germany for at least six months (German Health Ministry). Consumption is banned in pedestrian zones from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and near schools.
Netherlands Tolerated, with conditions Coffeeshop sales are technically illegal but tolerated, and national policy says only Dutch residents may buy, with enforcement left to each municipality (Government of the Netherlands). Check the city you're visiting. Amsterdam also banned smoking weed on the streets of the Red Light District in 2023.
Uruguay No (residents only, for now) The first country to legalize, but home grow, clubs and pharmacy sales all require residency or citizenship. Officials have said they're studying tourist access, but it isn't in place.
Thailand Only with a Thai prescription Since June 23, 2025, cannabis flower is controlled. Per the Tourism Authority of Thailand, tourists need a prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner, and buying or carrying flower without one is illegal. The open-air "weed shop on every corner" era is over.

Places not on this table aren't automatically off-limits, but if you can't find a clear answer on an official government site, treat it as illegal. Penalties abroad can be severe.

Where you can actually consume

Buying is the easy part. Finding a legal place to enjoy it trips up a lot of visitors.

  • Private property, with permission. The default in nearly every legal state. Public spaces (streets, parks, beaches, bars) are generally off-limits.
  • 420-friendly lodging. Most hotels are smoke-free, and that includes cannabis. Look for rentals that explicitly allow it, and check whether that means smoking, vaping or edibles only, and indoors or on a patio.
  • Consumption lounges. More states are licensing them, often with local opt-in. A January 2026 research brief from Washington's cannabis board counted 13 states that authorize consumption sites, some still pending implementation. Read our consumption lounge guide for etiquette and BYO rules.
  • Not in the car. Not while driving, not while parked, not in the rideshare. Open containers in vehicles are illegal in many states.

Buying legally at a dispensary

  1. Bring a valid government ID. You need to be 21+ for adult-use purchases. Out-of-state licenses and passports generally work.
  2. Use licensed shops only. Most state regulators publish a license lookup. Unlicensed "delivery" texts and pop-up shops are a gamble on what's in the product.
  3. Bring cash just in case. Payment options vary by shop.
  4. Know the limits. Purchase limits and taxes vary by state. Ask the budtender.
  5. Buy only what you'll finish. You can't take leftovers home, so don't buy like you're stocking up for winter.
  6. Go easy on edibles. Potency and serving sizes vary, and they take a while to kick in. Start low, wait, and don't double up because "it's not working."

Cannabis travel etiquette

  • Ask before you light up anywhere that isn't yours. A 420-friendly host may still mean "patio only."
  • Respect smoke-free laws and no-smoking signs. They apply to weed too.
  • Keep it away from anyone under 21.
  • Be chill with locals. Not everyone in a legal state wants a contact high at the bus stop.
  • Have a plan to get around that doesn't involve you driving.
  • Leave the rental clean. Ash, resin and smell are how 420-friendly listings stop being 420-friendly.

What to pack at your destination (and what never to pack)

Here's the gear move: your gear can live in your bag, but the cannabis is bought and finished at the destination. A good kit makes a rental feel like home.

Worth bringing

  • A small, solid grinder. Dispensary pre-grind is often dry and dusty. A pocket-size grinder lets you buy whole flower and grind fresh. Make sure it's clean: no flower, no kief, no residue (here's how to clean a grinder properly).
  • A smell-proof bag or container for storing what you buy while you're there.
  • Papers or a small piece, or just buy them at the destination.
  • Bumper Rings if your grinder bounces around in a backpack. They add grip and drop protection.

Never pack

  • Flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes or concentrates for a flight or any trip across a state line or border.
  • A grinder with leftover weed or kief in it.
  • "Just a little" for the drive home. It's still possession in the next state.

City quick notes

We used to run separate dispensary guides for seven cities. Shops open, close and change hands constantly, so instead of naming stores, here's what a visitor should know about each city's rules. Always check current local law before you go.

  • Los Angeles and San Francisco: California allows adults 21+ to use cannabis on private property, not in public places like restaurants or bars, and not within 1,000 feet of a school, day care or youth center while kids are present (California Department of Cannabis Control). Some cities license on-site consumption at specific venues, so look for licensed lounges.
  • Denver: Colorado law lets licensed "marijuana hospitality" spaces exist where both state and local authorities approve them (HB19-1230). Outside of those, plan on private property.
  • Portland: Oregon says marijuana can't be used in public places like streets and parks, and taking it across state lines is a federal offense.
  • Seattle: Retail is legal for 21+, but Washington doesn't currently allow cannabis consumption sites, per the state board's 2026 brief. Private residences only.
  • Phoenix: Arizona voters legalized adult use with Proposition 207 in 2020, and public consumption is not allowed under that law (ASU Morrison Institute summary). Lodging that allows it is your friend.
  • Boston: Massachusetts approved social consumption regulations that took effect January 2, 2026, but each town has to opt in and venues need licenses. Until a licensed spot opens near you, plan on private property.

Quick trip-planning checklist

  1. Confirm adult use is legal at your destination and that retail is actually open (not just "legal on paper").
  2. Look up the state or city's consumption rules, and whether any licensed lounges are near where you're staying.
  3. Book lodging that explicitly allows cannabis, and ask whether that includes smoking.
  4. Pack a clean grinder, a smell-proof container and your ID. Leave the stash at home.
  5. Plan rides so nobody drives after consuming.
  6. Budget to buy small and finish what you buy before you head home.

FAQ

Can I fly with weed between two legal states?

No. Airports and airspace fall under federal law, where cannabis is still illegal, and TSA refers it to law enforcement. Buy at your destination instead.

Can tourists buy weed in the US?

Yes, in adult-use states, at licensed dispensaries with a valid ID showing you're 21+. Purchase limits vary by state.

Can I bring my grinder on a trip?

Bring a clean one with no flower, kief or residue. Then buy cannabis legally at your destination and leave any leftovers behind.

Can tourists buy cannabis in Germany or Thailand?

Not easily. Germany has no retail stores and its clubs require six months' residency. Thailand requires a prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner for flower since June 2025.

Where can I smoke weed on vacation?

Usually private property where the owner allows it, 420-friendly rentals, or licensed consumption lounges. Public places are generally off-limits.

Plan the trip, respect the local rules, and let the grinder be the only thing that crosses state lines with you.
