10 Cannabis Accessories Actually Worth Owning (2026–2027)

January 07, 2024 6 min read

Updated October 2026

Short answer: the cannabis accessories actually worth owning are a good grinder, a rolling tray, quality papers or cones, a reliable lighter or hemp wick, airtight jars with humidity packs, a smell-proof lockable case, basic cleaning supplies, a dry herb vape if you vape, a pocket scale and a few kief tools. Buy those well once and skip the gimmicks.

Most "must-have accessories" lists read like somebody asked a robot to imagine the year 2050. AI-assisted dab rigs. Vaporizers that sync to your health app. Come on. You don't need any of that to have a great session. You need a short list of stuff that works every time and lasts.

Full disclosure: we're a grinder company. We make grinders and grinder parts, and that's it. So when we say a grinder is number one on the list, sure, take that with a grain of kief. For everything else on this list we don't sell it, we don't get a cut, and we're just telling you what we actually use. Adults 21+ only, and check your local laws, since rules on possession, storage and use vary a lot by state.

1. A grinder that cuts instead of crushes

Everything downstream depends on the grind. A good grinder gives you an even, fluffy texture that burns slow in a joint, packs right in a bowl and heats evenly in a vape. A bad one gives you dust, sticky threads and plastic shavings.

What to look for: anodized aluminum, sharp teeth that slice rather than mash, a removable screen if you want kief, and ideally no threads to gum up. A 4 piece medium covers most people. Our full breakdown is in how to choose a weed grinder, but the short version is the PRO 4 Piece Medium: 2.47 in, threadless lock, kief catcher, limited lifetime warranty.

2. A rolling tray

A tray keeps your flower, kief and papers in one spot instead of all over the couch. Get a metal one with raised edges and a little lip at one corner so you can funnel ground flower into a cone or back into a jar. Size it to your habits: a small tray for solo rolls, a big one if you're the group's designated roller.

Roll on the go? Our 4 Piece Large with paper holder and ashtray has a lid that works as a small rolling dish and ashtray, with a 1 1/4 paper dispenser built in. Not a full tray replacement, but it's the closest thing that fits in a bag.

3. Papers or cones you actually like

Thin, slow-burning papers make a noticeable difference in flavor and how evenly a joint burns. Most people end up loyal to one size and one material (rice, hemp or unbleached wood pulp). If rolling isn't your thing, pre-rolled cones and a packing tool get you a clean joint without the learning curve.

Pro tip: whatever you roll with, a fluffy, consistent grind matters more than the paper. If your joints run or canoe, it's usually the grind. We cover the whole technique in the art of rolling the perfect joint.

4. A lighter you trust (plus hemp wick)

Buy a refillable lighter or a few reliable disposables and keep one that never leaves the house. Hemp wick is the upgrade most people don't know about: a beeswax-coated hemp string you light once and use to light your bowl or joint. Lots of people prefer it because you're not holding a butane flame right up to your flower, and it gives you more control on a bowl.

5. Airtight jars and humidity packs

Flower dries out, gets crispy and loses its aroma fast in a plastic bag. Glass jars with an airtight seal, stored somewhere cool and dark, keep it fresh far longer. UV-blocking glass is a nice bonus if your shelf gets sun.

Add a two-way humidity pack to each jar. The common cannabis levels are 58% and 62%. A good rule of thumb from this storage guide on THCFarmer: 58% if you mostly roll joints or live somewhere humid, 62% if your climate is dry or your flower is already too crispy. Replace the pack when it turns hard.

Why it matters for grinding: flower that's too wet gums up a grinder and clogs screens. Flower that's too dry turns to powder. Properly stored flower grinds the best. If you're curious what's actually on the bud you're protecting, read what trichomes are and why they matter.

6. A smell-proof, lockable case

A carbon-lined, smell-proof case keeps the odor in, and a combination lock keeps it closed. If there are kids or teens anywhere in your home, or visiting it, a locking case isn't optional. Cannabis should be stored the way you'd store any adult product: out of sight and locked up. Pick one with enough room for your grinder, a small jar and a lighter so everything lives in one place.

Traveling within a legal state? Our cannabis travel guide covers what to pack, and why you never take cannabis on a plane or across state lines.

7. Cleaning supplies

Resin builds up on everything: pipes, bongs, trays and yes, grinders. A basic kit is cheap: 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol, coarse salt for glass, pipe cleaners, cotton swabs and a stiff small brush. A clean grinder turns smoother and grinds better, and a clean pipe tastes like your flower instead of last month.

For grinders, our grinder cleaning guide takes about ten minutes. If your screen is clogged past saving, a replacement Screen Kit ($14.99) is cheaper than a new grinder.

8. A dry herb vape (if you vape)

Dry herb vaporizers heat flower without burning it, and a lot of people say they notice more flavor, especially at lower temperatures. They range from small conduction pens to full desktop units, and the right one depends on how you use it. Read independent reviews, look at heat-up time, battery life and how easy the oven is to load and clean.

The accessory that makes any vape better is the grind. Vapes like a medium to fine, even grind so heat reaches everything at once. On a Phoenician, flip the grinder upside down and give it a few extra turns for a finer result. The why is in the science of grind size.

9. A pocket scale

A cheap digital scale that reads to 0.01 g settles a lot of questions. Did you actually get an eighth? How much are you putting in that batch of edibles? How fast are you going through a jar? It's the least exciting thing on this list and the one you'll be glad you bought. Get one with a calibration weight and a lid that protects the tray.

10. Kief tools

If you have a 4 piece grinder, kief is piling up in the bottom chamber. To use it, you need a small spoon or scraper and something to keep it in. A rounded, beveled bottom chamber makes scooping easier, and a 4 piece Phoenician comes with a kief spoon.

Want to change how much kief you collect? Our Upgrade Kit has three screens (180 micron fine, 300 standard and 400 coarse) plus a pick, a spare Lexon ring and the tools to swap them. Finer screens give cleaner kief more slowly. Coarser screens collect faster and handle sticky flower better.

  • Grinders with cranks, lights or batteries that still have dull cast teeth.
  • Plastic anything you'll use every day. It breaks, sheds and ends up in a landfill. We wrote about that in sustainable cannabis accessories.
  • "All-in-one kits" where everything is the cheapest version of itself. Buy fewer, better pieces instead.

Got a grinder already? Throw a set of Bumper Rings ($9.99) on it for extra grip and a little drop protection. Cheap insurance for something you use every day.

FAQ

What accessories do you need to smoke weed?

At minimum: a grinder, papers or a pipe, and a lighter. Add an airtight jar to keep flower fresh, and a tray once you're tired of cleaning the coffee table.

What's the most important cannabis accessory?

The grinder, and not only because we make them. Grind quality affects how evenly a joint burns, how a bowl hits and how well a vape heats, so it shows up in every session.

How should I store weed so it stays fresh?

Airtight glass jar, cool and dark place, with a 58% or 62% humidity pack. Keep it locked and out of reach of kids and pets.

What's a good gift for a cannabis lover?

Something they'll use daily and won't replace: a premium grinder, a nice tray, or a smell-proof case. A 4 piece grinder with an Upgrade Kit is a solid pick for someone who already has the basics.

That's the list. Ten things, bought once, used for years. Start with the one you touch every single session.
