Chemdawg 91 Strain: History, Flavor, and How to Grind It

July 28, 2023 5 min read

Updated October 2026

Short answer: Chemdawg 91 (Chem 91) is the original 1991 cut of the Chemdawg family, grown from seeds found in a bag of bud bought at a Grateful Dead show in Indiana. Its exact parents are unknown. It smells like fuel, chemicals and pine, and people describe it as a heady, euphoric hybrid. It's very resinous, so grind it gently with the 400 micron coarse screen.

If cannabis had a family tree with a "that's where it all started" branch, Chem 91 would be on it. Sour Diesel, a big chunk of the OG Kush story, and the whole modern obsession with "gas" all point back to one bag of seeds at a Dead show. Pretty good return on a parking-lot purchase.

Our 2023 post said Chem 91 was first grown in Colorado and that Chemdawg dated to the 1970s. Neither is right. Here's the better-documented version.

Where Chemdawg 91 came from

The story comes from the breeder known as Chemdog (sometimes spelled Chemdawg). According to the widely repeated account, summarized in Alchimia's history of the Chemdog and Diesel lines, Chemdog bought bud from two Deadheads, known as Joe Brand and Pbud, at the Grateful Dead's shows at the Deer Creek amphitheater in Noblesville, Indiana in June 1991. The Dead did play Deer Creek on June 6 and 7, 1991. One bag reportedly had a handful of seeds in it (13 is the number usually quoted).

Chemdog germinated some of those seeds back home on the East Coast. The first keeper, grown out in 1991, became Chem 91. Later finds from the same seed stock and its descendants became Chem D, Chem's Sister and Chem #4. The name comes from the bud itself, which the sellers called "Dog bud," plus the chemical smell.

Where did the original bag come from? Leafly's Chemdawg strain page says the sellers believed it was grown from Northern California seeds and that it reached Colorado via the Dead tour, which is probably where the "Colorado" claim came from. Theories about Thai or Nepalese landrace ancestry are just that, theories. The true parents of Chem 91 are unknown, and anyone who tells you otherwise with total confidence is guessing.

Aroma, flavor and terpenes

Chem 91 is loud. Expect diesel, chemical solvent, skunk and a sharp pine-lemon edge. Smoke is pungent and fuel-forward, with a lingering earthy finish. If your friends say it "smells like a gas station in the best way," they're right.

Terpene data varies between cuts and labs. Leafly's Chem 91 page lists myrcene, terpinolene and limonene as the leading terpenes, while the broader Chemdawg family is usually dominated by caryophyllene, with myrcene and limonene behind it. Translation: earthy-herbal, peppery, citrusy, and a few unidentified compounds doing the "gas" heavy lifting. Our terpene guide explains what each one smells like.

Commonly reported effects

People usually describe Chem 91 as euphoric, talkative, creative and energizing at first, with a heavier body feel later. It's a hybrid that tends to sit in the head. Leafly lists average THC around 21%, and cuts vary. It's strong, so if you're new to Chem strains, start small.

What Chem 91 buds look and feel like

  • Shape: chunky, irregular, slightly spiky nugs.
  • Density: medium to dense.
  • Color: olive to bright green with orange pistils, buried under trichomes.
  • Stickiness: high. Chem is greasy. It leaves resin on your fingers, your scissors and your grinder teeth.

That greasiness is the whole grinding challenge. Threaded grinders seize. Blunt teeth smear resin. Fine screens clog.

How to grind Chemdawg 91

  1. Break it by hand into small pieces and pull the stems. Sticky buds dropped in whole just compress into a puck.
  2. Load light. Less flower per grind means the teeth cut instead of smear.
  3. Use 5 to 7 short back-and-forth turns, not big spins. Spinning a greasy strain just paints the teeth with resin.
  4. Tap firmly before opening to knock flower through the drop-through holes and kief through the screen.
  5. If it gums up, put the grinder in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. Cold resin turns brittle and taps right out.
  6. Need it finer for a vape? Flip the grinder upside down and add a few turns.

Screen: this is a 400 micron coarse screen strain. The bigger openings let kief through instead of letting resin bridge the mesh. The 300 micron standard screen works if your flower is drier, but the 180 fine screen will clog fast with Chem. Swap guide here: how the Phoenician screen system works.

Best method: bowl or joint. A medium grind keeps the burn slow so the fuel flavor survives. Prefer no screen at all? A PRO 2 Piece Medium ($39.99) has nothing to clog and gives a fluffy cut. And clean often: our grinder cleaning guide covers the alcohol soak.

Famous descendants of the Chem family

  • Sour Diesel: most accounts trace it to an accidentally pollinated Chem 91 crop.
  • OG Kush: Leafly lists Chemdawg as a parent, though OG's origin is disputed.
  • Headband: OG Kush x Sour Diesel, which makes it Chem on both sides if you accept both stories.
  • Chem D, Chem's Sister and Chem #4: sister selections from the same original seed stock.

Growing notes (legal home growers only)

The real Chem 91 circulates mostly as a clone-only cut, so be skeptical of random "Chem 91 seeds." Growers report that it stretches, rewards training, and stinks hard in late bloom, so carbon filtration matters. Ask whoever sold you the clone for their flowering time, since it varies by cut and setup. Rules on home grow vary by state and city, so check your current local law. Basics in our home grow guide.
