Short answer: White Widow is a Dutch hybrid bred in the 1990s by Shantibaba at Green House Seeds from a Brazilian sativa landrace and a South Indian indica. It won the Cannabis Cup in 1995. Expect earthy, woody, peppery flavor, a myrcene-led terpene profile and an upbeat, talkative buzz. It's absurdly frosty, so grind it in a 4 piece and save the kief.
Before every strain on the shelf looked like it was rolled in powdered sugar, there was White Widow. It's the strain that made "frosty" a selling point in the first place. Thirty years later it's still on menus, still in seed catalogs, and still one of the best excuses to own a grinder with a kief chamber.
According to Wikipedia's White Widow entry, the strain was created by Shantibaba (Scott Blakey) while he was working with Green House Seeds in the Netherlands, crossing a Brazilian sativa landrace with a resin-heavy South Indian indica. It took the Cannabis Cup in 1995 and became an Amsterdam coffee-shop staple.
Here's the twist most strain sites skip. Shantibaba later left Green House and co-founded Mr. Nice Seeds, where the original White Widow line is sold under the name Black Widow. Green House kept selling White Widow too. So "the real White Widow" has two claimants, and fans still argue about which line is closer to the 1995 plant. We're not picking a side. We're just telling you the argument exists.
What we did fix: our old version called it 60% sativa as if that were a lab result. That's gone. White Widow is a balanced hybrid, and genetics vary a lot by seed line and grower.
White Widow is not a candy strain. It's old school: earthy, woody, a little floral, with a peppery bite. Some cuts throw a light citrus or even a soapy note.
Those terpenes live in the trichomes, and White Widow has trichomes to spare. That's the whole grinding story in one sentence. If you want the science, read our explainer on what trichomes are and why kief happens.
Reviews are pretty consistent. People describe White Widow as:
Potency varies a lot by seed line. Leafly lists it around 15% THC, while plenty of modern cuts test higher. Start low, wait a bit, and remember everyone's tolerance is different. Adults 21+ only.
The name says it all. White Widow buds are chunky and conical, light green, and so coated in trichomes they look white or silver from a few feet away. Texture runs a bit looser and fluffier than a dense OG nug, and the resin makes it slightly tacky. Every time you handle it, trichomes come off on your fingers. Every time you grind it, more come off on the teeth. The question is whether they end up in a kief chamber or in the trash.
White Widow is easy to grind and easy to waste. Fluffy structure means it breaks apart quickly, and all that frost means a 2 piece grinder (or your fingers) throws away a lot of kief. Here's the move:
Best method: a dry herb vape or a clean glass bowl. White Widow's earthy-pepper flavor is subtle, and lower heat keeps it from getting buried. Joints work great too, especially with a pinch of the kief you just saved sprinkled on top. Coarse vs fine explained in the Grind Guide.

White Widow is one of the most-used parents in modern breeding. A few well-documented crosses:
And of course Black Widow, which is either a descendant, a sibling or the original, depending on who you ask.
Where home grow is legal, White Widow has a reputation as a forgiving grow. Leafly puts indoor flowering at about 60 days, and plants stay manageable in height. The resin is the payoff and also the smell problem, so plan for ventilation and odor control. Rules on plant counts vary by state; check current state and local law before you plant anything. A 4 piece with a kief screen. This strain sheds trichomes like crazy, and a 2 piece leaves that kief on the teeth.
White Widow made frost famous. Don't throw half of it away.

A 2 piece weed grinder is a lid and a bowl, nothing else. No screen to clog, no chamber to empty, and a fluffier grind because the flower stays in the teeth instead of dropping through holes. Phoenician 2 piece grinders use the same arced cutter blades, threadless quick lock and aircraft grade aluminum as the PRO 4 piece, with a notched grip groove around the body, and they carry the same limited lifetime warranty.
People who roll or pack right away and do not want to collect kief, people who want the fastest clean possible, and anyone who prefers a lighter grinder. If you want to save trichomes, choose a 4 piece grinder with a kief catcher instead.
