Short answer: AK-47 is a sativa-leaning hybrid released in 1992 by Dutch seed bank Serious Seeds, built from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghani landraces. The name refers to its "one hit" reputation. Expect earthy, skunky, sweet-spicy flavor with a sandalwood edge, and a steady, social head buzz. Buds are compact and dense, so break them up first and grind medium for joints.
Few strain names are as loud as this one. AK-47 sounds like it should flatten you, and then it mostly makes people chatty. It's also one of the most decorated strains ever, a parent of a lot of what came after, and a dense little nug that rewards a sharp grinder. Let's get the story straight first, because the internet hasn't.
AK-47 was bred by Simon, founder of Serious Seeds in the Netherlands. The breeder's own AK-47 page dates it to 1992 and lists its background as Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan landraces: three sativas and an indica.
On the name: Simon has said it's about the effect, a "one hit wonder" quality, not about the rifle's reputation. Love it or roll your eyes at it, the name stuck.
Serious Seeds says AK-47 has collected 27 awards over the years and was named High Times Strain of the Year in 2003. Those are the breeder's numbers, and we haven't checked every trophy independently, but its run in 1990s and 2000s competitions is well documented.
What we fixed from our old version: it claimed AK-48 is "a phenotype" of AK-47 and listed a "Blueberry AK" as a famous cross. We couldn't verify either, so they're gone.
AK-47 smells sweeter than its name. The breeder describes spicy and sweet citrus with a sandalwood undertone. Grower reports add lemon and a buttery skunk note. Smokers on Leafly mostly call out skunk, earth and a little tobacco.
Terpenes evaporate faster once flower is ground, so grind right before the session. Our terpene guide explains why heat and friction matter.
Despite the name, reviews skew mellow and functional:
Leafly lists it around 19% THC, though cuts vary. Too much of anything sativa-leaning can make some people anxious, so start slow. Adults 21+ only.
Modern menus are full of dessert-named hybrids bred for 30% THC and candy terps. AK-47 is the opposite pitch: an older, balanced profile that people buy because they know what they're getting. It's also a common gateway into the Dutch seed-bank classics, alongside Northern Lights and White Widow. If your budtender hands you a jar labeled AK-47, ask which seed line or cut it came from. Names drift, and a lot of "AK" on shelves today is a cross, not the 1992 original.
Serious Seeds describes compact, dense buds with unusually large calyxes stacked together, and a plant that isn't very leafy. In the jar that means tight, heavy little nugs, bright green with orange hairs and a solid trichome coat. Squeeze one and it doesn't give much. That density is the key to grinding it well.
Dense flower punishes weak grinders. Blunt teeth just push a tight nug around until you give up and use scissors. Sharp, scissor-style teeth slice it instead. Here's the routine:
Best method: a joint or a bowl. A medium grind gives AK-47 an even burn that shows off the sweet, skunky flavor. For a vape, go finer with the flip trick. The science of grind size explains why cutting beats crushing, and the Grind Guide shows what each texture looks like.

No threads to strip or gum up, either. The patented threadless lock opens and closes with a short twist, about a third of a turn.
AK-47 shows up all over modern family trees. The ones we'd stand behind:
If home grow is legal where you are, AK-47 has a reputation as a vigorous, manageable plant. The breeder lists 53 to 63 days of flowering indoors and a Christmas-tree shape that isn't too leafy, which makes trimming easier. It's not odorless, so plan ventilation. Plant limits vary by state, so check current state and local law first. Our home grow guide covers drying and curing.
Breeder Simon of Serious Seeds has said the name refers to its "one hit" effect, not the weapon's reputation.
A sativa-leaning hybrid. Three of its four landrace parents are sativas; the fourth is an Afghani indica.
Simon, founder of Serious Seeds in the Netherlands, with a release date of 1992 per the breeder.
Break dense nugs into small pieces, use a sharp grinder, and give it 8 to 12 short twists for a medium grind. Flip the grinder for finer vape-ready flower.
A dense, classic strain like this deserves teeth that actually cut.

A 2 piece weed grinder is a lid and a bowl, nothing else. No screen to clog, no chamber to empty, and a fluffier grind because the flower stays in the teeth instead of dropping through holes. Phoenician 2 piece grinders use the same arced cutter blades, threadless quick lock and aircraft grade aluminum as the PRO 4 piece, with a notched grip groove around the body, and they carry the same limited lifetime warranty.
People who roll or pack right away and do not want to collect kief, people who want the fastest clean possible, and anyone who prefers a lighter grinder. If you want to save trichomes, choose a 4 piece grinder with a kief catcher instead.
Medium: 2.47 inch diameter, 1.14 inch tall, 5 oz. The everyday size. $39.99.
Large: 3.225 inch diameter, 1.14 inch tall, 9 oz. For bigger batches and shared sessions. $49.99.
