Purple Haze Strain: History, Flavor, and How to Grind It

December 15, 2023 5 min read

Updated October 2026

Short answer: Purple Haze is a sativa-leaning classic usually traced to Purple Thai and Haze genetics, with sweet, earthy, berry-and-spice flavor and an upbeat, creative reputation. Its exact origin is undocumented, and the name almost certainly borrows from Jimi Hendrix's 1967 song. The buds tend to be lighter and airier than indicas, so grind gently: a few short turns, or a 2 piece for a fluffy joint.

Purple Haze might be the most famous strain name that nobody can fully explain. Everyone's heard of it. Your uncle swears he smoked "the real stuff" at a concert in 1971. Half the jars labeled Purple Haze today aren't even that purple. It's a classic with more legend than paperwork, so let's sort out what's actually known, then talk about how to grind it without turning it into dust.

The origin story (and what we got wrong)

The most commonly cited lineage is Purple Thai x Haze. Leafly's Purple Haze page says it's "believed" to descend from those two, which is the right amount of confidence. There's no credited breeder, no release date, and no seed company that can show original paperwork.

The Haze side has a better-known backstory. Leafly places Haze's roots in Santa Cruz, California in the 1960s, where long growing seasons suited its very long flowering time. Even that is argued about: some growers say original Haze was all Colombian genetics, while Leafly lists Colombian, Mexican, Thai and South Indian roots. If you want the Haze family's later glow-up, read our Super Silver Haze strain guide.

The old version of this post also said Purple Haze was the parent of Purple Kush, Cherry Pie and Blue Dream. That doesn't hold up. Per Leafly, Cherry Pie comes from Granddaddy Purple and Blue Dream comes from Blueberry and Haze, so Blue Dream is more of a cousin through the Haze side. We couldn't find credible lineage tying Purple Kush to Purple Haze either. Corrected.

The Jimi Hendrix connection

"Purple Haze" the song came out in March 1967 in the UK and that June in the US. The strain shares its name, and most people assume it was named after the song. Here's the twist: according to the song's Wikipedia entry, Hendrix said it came from a dream and was influenced by a science fiction novel, and he and his team denied it was about drugs at all. So the song didn't name-check a strain. More likely, growers borrowed the most psychedelic two words in rock history for their purple sativa. Great marketing then, great marketing now.

Aroma, flavor and terpenes

Expect sweet and earthy with berry on top and a sharp, spicy edge. Some batches lean floral, with people describing lavender or violet notes. Leafly lists these as the dominant terpenes:

Terpene Smells like Role in Purple Haze
Myrcene Herbal, earthy The earthy base
Caryophyllene Pepper, spice The sharp spice on the exhale
Limonene Citrus A bright lift on top of the berry

About the purple: that color comes from anthocyanins, the same pigments in blueberries and red cabbage. Genetics decide whether a plant can turn purple, and conditions like cooler nights can bring it out. A green bud labeled Purple Haze isn't automatically fake, but it is worth a raised eyebrow.

Commonly reported effects

Purple Haze is the opposite of a couch strain in most people's experience. Reviews tend to describe an energetic, giggly, creative head buzz that stays functional, the kind of strain people pick for music, art or a long walk. Like any sativa-leaning strain, some folks find it racy at higher doses. Potency varies a lot by grower, so read the label, start small, and keep it legal. Adults 21+ only.

What Purple Haze buds look and feel like

Sativa-leaning flower usually grows longer, lighter buds with more space between the calyxes than a chunky indica. Good Purple Haze shows purple or lavender streaks, orange hairs and a decent coat of trichomes. Squeeze it and it springs back. It's usually less sticky than something like GDP, and it breaks apart easily. That's great news for your grinder and bad news for over-grinders, because airy flower goes from "perfect" to "powder" fast.

How to grind Purple Haze

Light, dry-ish flower needs a lighter touch. The goal is a fluffy, even grind that burns slow and keeps the flavor.

  1. Pull it apart by hand first. Tease the long buds into thumbnail-sized pieces and pull out the stems.
  2. Two to four short turns. That's often all airy sativa needs. Check before you keep going.
  3. Tap it through. A couple of taps drops the cut flower through the holes before it gets overworked.
  4. Want it finer for a dry herb vape? Flip the grinder upside down so the flower sits on the teeth, then add a few turns.

2 piece or 4 piece? For joints, a 2 piece is hard to beat with this strain. There's no screen, the flower stays in the teeth, and you get a fluffy, rollable cut. If you want to save kief, use a 4 piece. With drier sativa flower, the 180 micron fine screen from the Upgrade Kit keeps plant dust out of your kief. Humid climate or a frosty batch? Stick with the standard 300 micron or go up to the 400 coarse. Not sure what screens do? Our trichome and kief guide covers it.

Relatives and crosses

Purple Haze's family tree is fuzzy, but the Haze side is everywhere. Haze genetics show up in Super Silver Haze and, per Leafly, in Blue Dream (Blueberry x Haze). For the Thai side, our Thai stick guide covers the landrace that started a lot of this.

Growing notes (where it's legal)

Home grow laws differ by state, and some states allow none, so check current state and local rules first. For legal growers, Haze-type plants are known for long flowering times, tall stretchy growth and a love of light and warmth. Expect a bigger plant and a longer wait than an indica. Our home grow guide walks through harvest, dry and cure.

FAQ

Is Purple Haze a sativa or indica?

It's generally sold as a sativa or sativa-dominant strain, and people usually describe it as energetic and creative rather than sleepy.

Was the Purple Haze strain named after Jimi Hendrix?

Probably, in the sense that the strain borrowed the song's name. Hendrix himself said the 1967 song came from a dream and a sci-fi novel, not a strain.

What does Purple Haze taste like?

Sweet and earthy with berry and a spicy finish. Some batches have floral, lavender-like notes.

What's the best grinder for Purple Haze?

A sharp 2 piece for fluffy joints, or a 4 piece with a fine or standard screen if you want to collect kief. Use fewer turns than you would for dense indicas.

Legend says it tastes better ground right. That part of the legend we can confirm.
